People falling from heights, or being struck by dropped objects, result in more deaths and disabling injuries than any other occupational cause in the construction industry.
 
At Altius we understand the required safety measures that need to be implemented at the workplace when working at height. We offer a wide variety of courses to address every level of working at height situation, from the operator and supervisor on site to the risk assessor and planner implementing all the correct practices.

 Basic Fall Arrest Technician (Level 1)
Unit Standard - 229998

Explain & perform fall arrest techniques when working at height.
 
The purpose of the course is to teach safe working procedures and use of fall arrest equipment to workers performing their duties at height (1.4m +) where there exists the risk of a fall that may lead to injury.

Explain & perform fall arrest techniques when working at height.
 

Course outline:
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the limitations of a limited range of fall arrest equipment and regulations
  • Inspect, assemble and store fall arrest equipment
  • Select suitable anchor points
  • Use fall arrest systems with a double lanyard
  • Use pre-installed vertical and horizontal lifelines and explain reducing risk during a rescue
 
Requirements:
  • Certified copy of ID/Passport
  • Medical Certificate
  • 2 x Colour ID Photos

Fall Arrest Technician (Level 2)
Unit Standard - 229998 

Explain & perform fall arrest techniques when working at height.
Unit Standard - 229995 
Install, use and perform basic rescues from fall arrest systems and implement the fall protection plan.
 
The purpose of the course is to teach workers safe installation practices of lifelines, the relevance of the fall protection plan, emergency procedures, rescue plan and a rescue of a conscious/unconscious casualty in addition to what is covered under level 1.

Course outline:
  • Everything as stated under Basic Fall Arrest Technician (Level 1)
  • Explain the use of a range of fall arrest equipment and knowledge of applicable regulations
  • Explain and use basic rope knots
  • Install and use fall arrest systems
  • Inspect and assemble fall arrest equipment and systems
  • Interpret and implement a fall protection plan
  • Perform basic fall arrest rescues to bring a casualty down to safety

  • Medical Certificate
  • 2 x Colour ID Photos
 
Duration = 2 Days
 
 
Fall Protection Planner (Online course)
Unit Standard - 229994
Assess a work site and prepare a fall protection plan.
 
The purpose of this course is to teach people in charge of teams working at height, how to effectively plan, manage and document such activities in a way that ensures compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHS Act) and Regulations, as well as industry best practices requirements.

OHS Act CR 10.1(a): “A contractor must designate a competent person to be responsible for the preparation of a fall protection plan”
OHS Act CR 1: “Competent person means a person who:
  1. Has in respect to the work or task to be performed the required knowledge, training and experience and, where applicable, qualifications, specific to the work task: provided that where appropriate qualifications and training are registered in terms of the provisions of the National Qualifications Framework Act, 200 (Act No. 67 or 2000), those qualifications and that training must be regarded as the required qualifications and training; and
  2. Is familiar with the Act and with the applicable regulations made under the Act
 
Course outline:
  • Perform a risk assessment of the worksite where work is to be done at height
  • Demonstrate knowledge of fall arrest rescue equipment and advanced fall arrest rescue techniques
  • Develop a fall protection plan and fall arrest plan
  • Manage safety of personnel working at height

  • Work at Height qualification
 
Duration = 3 Days
 

Confined Space Entry & Rescue
 
The program will equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding in identifying the hazards of confined spaces and the precautions required for the safety of workers and the public.
 
Course outline:
  • Identification of Confined Spaces
  • Permit to confined spaces
  • Confined space entry requirements
  • Hazard identification
  • Basic BA training and awareness
  • Atmospheric monitoring techniques
  • Confined space entry and rescue techniques
 
Requirements:
  • Certified copy of ID/Passport
  • Medical Certificate

  • Rope access qualification
 
Duration = 1 Day
 
 
Rope Rigging

Rope Rigging.
 
The purpose of this course is to teach learners to perform basic rigging procedures and explain the relevance of rope rigging to fall protection planning. A person can be prevented from falling either directly, or indirectly. Rope Rigging is an indirect way of preventing a person from suffering a fall , through making sure that loose items that are potentially too heavy, or too awkward to climb with safely, are transported at height on a system that is independent from the climber’s safety system.

Course outline:
  • Understanding the work at height risk assessment
  • Implementing a lifting plan
  • Appropriate equipment care and inspection methods
  • Identify appropriate equipment used for rope rigging
  • Limitations of rigging equipment
  • Assemble various lifting systems
  • Sling various objects for lifting
  • Selecting safe anchor points
  • Explain and use appropriate rope knots

Duration = 2 Days
 
 
Equipment Management and Inspection

Climbing Equipment Management and Inspection.
 
The purpose of this course is to teach learners how to inspect and manage all work at height equipment as per ISO-22846-1&2 standards and worldwide best practices.

Course outline:
  • Legislation regarding work at height equipment inspections
  • The correct care and inspection of work at height equipment
  • The correct function testing of work at height equipment
  • The correct inspection of hardware & software equipment
  • Equipment control procedures: includes inspection sheets and detailed description of various PPE used at height
  • Equipment traceability
 
Requirements:
  • Certified copy of ID/Passport
  • Medical Certificate
  • 2 x Colour ID Photos
